The first documentary attestation of the city dates back to 1334, thereafter constantly appearing under various names, on the maps of that times.

The foundation and development of the city on both sides of Timiş river, was closely linked to the development of social and economic life of Banat, but also to the physical and geographical conditions particularly favorable of human settlements.

Over the centuries, Lugoj had an eventful history of the most varied. Its location in Banat, political-administrative area with a significant military potential in the region, made the city to pass in order, by belonging to the Hungarian feudal kingdom, followed by the Ottoman suzerainty and then to an area with significant military potential in the area. Since the eighteenth century, in Lugoj existed two distinct communities - Romanian and German Lugoj - whose unification took place in 1795.

During the XVIII - XIX centuries Lugoj experienced a significant development, given the existence of the guilds that have generated, in practice, the incipient development of the industry. Also during this period, Lugoj played an important role both in cultural and ecumenical life of the area and the revolutionary struggles - the revolution of 1848, World War I and the Great Union that followed.
